Many moms spend so much time caring for everyone else that they forget what it feels like to care for themselves.
Your day may begin before the sun comes up. You're preparing breakfast, getting everyone ready, answering messages, and moving from one responsibility to the next. By the time you finally pause, your body feels tired and your mind is already thinking about tomorrow.
Ayurveda reminds us that healing often begins with the small rituals we practice every day. One of the most cherished of these is Abhyanga, a warm oil massage that has been part of Ayurvedic tradition for thousands of years.
What Is Abhyanga?
Abhyanga is a full-body self-massage using warm herbal oil. It is considered one of the most important daily practices in Ayurveda because it supports both physical and emotional well-being.
Rather than seeing your body as something that simply gets you through the day, Abhyanga invites you to see your body as your home.
Many of us don't realize how healing it can be to slow down, place our hands on our own body, and offer ourselves the same care we so freely give to others.

Benefits of a Daily Oil Massage
This simple practice offers many nourishing benefits, including:
- Supporting healthy, glowing and young skin
- Stimulating healthy circulation
- Encouraging lymphatic drainage
- Hydrating deeper layers of tissue
- Helping the body feel more relaxed and balanced
- Creating a greater sense of calm and grounding
Research has also explored the potential benefits of daily sesame oil massage for supporting healthy brain function and reducing the risk of cognitive decline.
What we often don't realize is that caring for our body each day also supports our emotional well-being.

How to Practice Abhyanga
Love your body by covering it head to toe in warm oil – organic sesame, coconut, or almond.
Choose your oil based on your body temperature:
- Coconut oil – Hot
- Sesame oil – Cold
- Mix coconut and sesame oil – Balanced (middle)
Note: Warm oil feels more calming and nourishing. Warm the bottle by placing it in a mug of hot water for a few minutes.

Begin at the top of your head and slowly massage your entire body.
Use:
- Circular motions around the joints
- Long strokes along the arms and legs
- Gentle massage over the abdomen and chest
- Finish by massaging your feet
Allow the oil to soak into your skin for 10 to 15 minutes before taking a warm shower.

More Than a Massage
As you move your hands over your body, allow this to become more than another task on your to-do list.
Take a moment to:
- Admire your own beauty.
- Connect with the spirit behind your eyes.
- Thank your body for carrying you through each day.
- Remember that your body is your home.
This simple shift turns Abhyanga into a mindfulness practice as much as a physical one.

Creating a Morning Ritual
You don't need an hour to experience the benefits.
Even ten to fifteen minutes each morning can become a beautiful way to begin your day.
Instead of rushing into your responsibilities, you begin by filling your own cup first. From that place, it often feels easier to care for everyone else with more patience, energy, and presence.
