Some days, your mind feels like it never stops.
Even after the house is quiet, your thoughts keep going. Your shoulders stay tense. Your jaw feels tight. Sleep doesn't come as easily as you'd like.
Or you wake up around 2 or 3 am and then cannot go back to sleep. The thoughts rush in and now you are awake with a busy mind.
Ayurveda offers many simple rituals that invite the body to slow down.
One of these practices is Ear Oiling.
What Is Ear Oiling?
Ear Oiling, traditionally known as Karna Purana, is an ancient Ayurvedic self-care practice that involves placing a few drops of warm oil into each ear.
In Ayurveda, this gentle ritual is believed to help calm Vata dosha, the energy associated with movement, the nervous system, and the mind.
When Vata becomes aggravated, you may notice restlessness, anxious thoughts, difficulty sleeping, muscle tension, or a feeling of being overstimulated.
Ear oiling is one of the many simple daily rituals Ayurveda recommends to help restore a sense of balance.
Benefits of Ear Oiling
The Benefits of Ear Oiling extend beyond caring for the ears themselves.
With regular practice, many people find this ritual helps them feel more grounded and relaxed.
According to Ayurvedic tradition, ear oiling may help:
- Calm an aggravated Vata dosha
- Support a healthy nervous system
- Encourage deep relaxation
- Promote more restful sleep
- Ease tension in the jaw and neck
- Support the natural production of earwax
- Soothe feelings of overstimulation
- Support emotional balance during stressful times
Many people also enjoy ear oiling for anxiety and ear oiling for sleep as part of their evening wind-down routine.

Why Sesame Oil?
Traditional Ayurveda recommends using warm sesame oil for ears because of its naturally warming and nourishing qualities.
Unrefined, cold-pressed sesame oil is most commonly used for this practice.
Some Ayurvedic companies also offer herbal ear oils specifically prepared for Karna Purana.
Choosing a Quality Sesame Oil
Look for:
- Organic
- Cold-pressed
- Unrefined sesame oil
Many Ayurvedic practitioners also recommend trusted brands such as Banyan Botanicals or Maharishi Ayurveda for oils prepared specifically for ear care.

How to Practice Ear Oiling
If you're wondering how to practice Ayurvedic ear oiling, follow these simple steps.
1. Prepare the Oil
Fill a small dropper bottle with unrefined, cold-pressed sesame oil. You can also purchase this one.
Warm the bottle by placing it in a mug of hot water for a few minutes.
The oil should feel comfortably warm, never hot.
Always test a drop on the back of your hand first.
2. Apply the Oil
Lie comfortably on one side or gently tilt your head.
Place 2 drops of warm oil into one ear.
Place a small cotton ball loosely at the opening of the ear.
Repeat on the other side.
3. Rest
Many people enjoy practicing ear oiling before bedtime.
Allow yourself to simply relax and let the calming ritual become part of your evening routine.
When Should You Avoid Ear Oiling?
Although natural ear care practices can be beneficial for many people, ear oiling is not appropriate for everyone.
Avoid ear oiling if you have:
- An ear infection
- A perforated eardrum
- Water trapped in the ear
- Recently been swimming
- Significant ear pain or drainage
- A newborn infant unless advised by a qualified healthcare professional
If you're unsure whether ear oiling is appropriate for you, speak with your healthcare provider before trying the practice.
A Gentle Reminder
Sometimes, a few drops of warm oil and a few quiet moments before bed can become more than a self-care ritual. They can become a way of telling your body, "You are safe. You can rest now."
If you've been feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or like your nervous system has been stuck in overdrive, practices like ear oiling may offer a gentle way to slow down and reconnect with yourself.
